Château de Cirey

Fleeing Paris, Voltaire discovered a dilapidated château in Cirey, where the wind was blowing in all directions.

Against all odds, Voltaire was seduced by the place, changed his plans and decided to settle permanently in Cirey, making it a pleasant place to live.

With the approval of the Marquis du Châtelet, he undertook major restoration work, and then, finding the château too small to accommodate guests, he enlarged it and built a long gallery topped by a terrace.
